Custom Order FAQ

  • What types of jewelry can I order?

Including, but not limited to: engagement/wedding rings, commitment rings, cocktail/righthand rings, pendants, earrings and bracelets.

  • How do I start the custom jewelry design process?

To begin, simply contact us through the form on our website, schedule a consultation or visit our store. Share your ideas, preferences, and any specific requirements you have for your custom piece.

  • How do I start the idea gathering process?

Inspiration comes in many ways, the goal we layout for you is to understand firstly where you may wish to wear the new jewelry item (i.e. ring, earrings, etc.) and secondly, our designers need to understand your style.

We encourage you to gather images that provide the style, essence, mood of the design you wish to evoke. These images do not have to be specific to the gems you have, the placement or even jewelry! Our designers are here to interpret your gems into the style guides you provide.

  • Can I bring in my design ideas or images for inspiration?

Absolutely! We encourage customers to bring in reference images, sketches, or any inspirational materials that can help us understand the vision for your jewelry.

  • How long does it take to create custom jewelry?

The timeframe for custom jewelry creation varies based on the complexity of the design and the time of year. An average timeline is 4-6 weeks start to finish.

  • What materials are available for custom jewelry?

We work with a variety of materials, including 14k white, yellow, rose gold, 18k white, yellow, rose gold and platinum. We can provide or will use your gemstones, diamonds, and more. Our experts can guide you on material options suitable for your design and budget.

  • How do I place an order for custom jewelry?

Submit an online form for remote orders, or schedule a time to meet with a designer in-person to discuss the goals for your project and to begin the concept art phase.

After finalizing the concept art and quote, we take a 50% partially refundable deposit to begin the work. If we are using your gemstones, the gems will be removed upon receipt of deposit.

  • Can I redesign my jewelry?

Absolutely! That is the primary service we offer at Croft & Stern. We will reimage your jewelry by using your gemstones and creating new designs or styles with your sentimental gems.

What about the gold? - gold or platinum is not suggested for reuse. To ensure we provide you with the best outcome possible, we highly recommend using fresh metal. To offset the cost, we will provide a trade for your precious metals at a high percentage of metal market value.

But I want to use my gold - While we do not recommend it, some guests feel so attached to the metal that the lack of any quality guarantees or warranties are worth it. Please speak with us to see if your metal qualifies for reuse.

  • Does my jewelry stay at your store?

From start to finish, your jewelry stays at Croft & Stern. Our retail store space and manufacturing facility are combined at our Maple Grove, MN location. From our in-person meetings through the production process, your items stay here, securely in a vault.

  • What is the pricing for custom jewelry?

The cost of custom jewelry depends on various factors like design complexity, materials used, and craftsmanship.

While our average project starts between $2,500-$3,000, prices can be as low as $1,500 and as high as your imagination can soar.

We'll provide a detailed quote after discussing your design preferences. Should you have a specific budgetary goal, please be prepared to disclose your budget, as this information assists us in designing the perfect jewelry for you.

  • Can I make changes to the design during the process?

Yes, we encourage and value your input throughout the process. We'll collaborate closely with you, allowing for adjustments until you're satisfied with the final design.

  • Do you offer engraving or personalization services?

Yes, we provide engraving and personalization options to add a special touch to your custom piece. Share your specific requests during the consultation.

  • What if I do not have any jewelry to redesign?

Then let’s start fresh! Our designers and gemologists can source most gems or diamonds by request.

  • Will you design with lab grown diamonds?

Absolutely. We work with both lab-grown and earth-mined diamonds.

  • Do you offer warranties or guarantees for custom jewelry?

We stand by the quality of our craftsmanship. Each custom piece comes with a manufacturer warranty and the option to add maintenance care plans. See our warranty page for more info.

  • What is the typical process?

Step 1: The Initial Meeting - Make an in-store appointment or virtual meeting with a designer.

Step 2: Gather ideas. Provide details of your style and how and where your new jewelry item will be worn.

Step 3: Bring or send the gems/jewelry to the appointment with your designer. This initial consultation will go over many details and provide the framework of the project.

Step 4: When you are ready to move forward your designer will create a series of concept art designs. These designs will give you the general layout of what your design could be, including pricing.

Step 5: Deposit - YAY! You love the concept art and you are ready to move into the build. We require 50% down of the project total to move into CAD technical renderings.

Step 6: With a deposit secured, we remove the gems, or order gems on your behalf. The CAD renderings (digital animations) are made and emailed or text to you. These photos will allow you the opportunity to see the jewelry before it is made in any material. Many guests use this tool to select final metal color options.

Step 7: The renderings are approved, now it is time to try on the jewelry for size and scale. A 3D print - a plastic life-size model, is made for you to try on in-store, or mailed to you if remote. We put the primary gems in their positions and you are able to try on the model! You can still make any changes or adjustments to the design.

We find that with both the digital renderings, and the 3D print, our guests are able to fully understand the design before it is made in precious metals.

Step 8: You have approved the 3D print, now our production team gets started on turning that 3D print into gold or platinum. Lost wax casting directly from a 3D print is done, gems are set, the jewelry is polished.

Step 9: Every item we make comes with an insurance replacement valuation, as well as the option to add a maintenance package.

Step 10: Enjoy your jewelry! Congratulations.
